Costa Rica: Pt 23 – Sunsetting on La Gito de Costa

Last night there was thunder so loud that it shook the accommodation, but it did not rain?

We got up and made our breakfast, we have not had to do that in a while. We have been treating ourselves. The main reason we could treat ourselves on this trip is the time of year we have come. I was speaking to the owner of the accommodation and she said that in the “dry” season all the hotels, cabinas etc are fully booked. Prices are more than three times more expensive. She also said that we had come in the better weeks because in the dry season there is not a single cloud and everything seems like a desert. The trees don’t have leaves and it is very dusty. It is hard to imagine the views without the vibrant greens that we have been lucky to experience.

The owner had a lovely dog called June and she just wanted petting. If you stopped she would try and wedge her head back under your hand. She was really gentle and sweet.

June

It was not long before we got to our first beach of the day. It was a really nice one. The sand was very soft. There were a load of surfers taking advantage of the waves.

There were lots more of the vibrant greens that I referenced earlier.

On the surfer beach we met Bob from Calgary, he wanted a picture of us to show his friends and family.

Bob from Calgary

We have met quite a few people from Canada and specifically Calgary whilst being in Costa Rica.

There was one stretch of wall that had about sixteen large iguanas perched on top of about a 20 metre long wall.

We bought some fruit from the roadside. They are called Rambutan. They are related to the Lychee and taste like a mix of grape and strawberry.

We stopped at a soda for a smoothie and some lunch.

Casado

A casado is a Costa Rican meal with rice, black beans, plantains, salad, a tortilla, and an optional protein source such as chicken, beef, pork, fish or eggs/cheese. The combination of the rice, salad and beans is really nice.

Just before we got to our digs we passed another beach.

Pool area of the hotel

We got a shower and went to Playa Flamingo to watch the sunset with a smoothie.

Tomorrow we might just hang around the pool and chill before we do our last stint on the bike back up to the airport hotel.

At that point I will strip the bike down and get it taped up back in the cardboard box. That won’t take long, about an hour max.
